Stanley Thomas Rouse was born on 4th November 1916 in Gravesend, Kent. His father was Thomas Charles Rouse, a Builder’s Clerk, and his mother was Ada Louise (née Hicks). The first school that he attended was Cecil Road School in Gravesend.
In 1928 Stanley Rouse joined The County School for Boys – now known as Gravesend Grammar School. The Head Master at that time was the Reverend Samuel Lister. The County School for Boys was located in Darnley Road, Gravesend close to the Railway Station (now the Victoria Centre for Education). In 1938 the School moved to brand new premises in Church Walk, Milton, Gravesend opposite to Milton Church.
The School’s Admission Register lists Stanley’s address as 128 Pelham Road, Gravesend. Whilst at the School, Stanley was in Cliff House. Younger brother Geoffrey (born 1920) also attended the School. In World War Two, Geoffrey was a Flight Lieutenant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves and was awarded the DFC – Citation for DFC reads: “Flight Lieut Rouse has completed two tours of operational duty. He has throughout displayed great gallantry and keenness and set a fine example to the other members of his squadron. In June 1944. while engaged in anti-shipping patrol, this officer participated in a most successful attack against an enemy force consisting of one 10,000-ton tanker, a 5-6,000-ton coastal vessel and 5 minesweepers.’
In 1933 Stanley left the School and started work for Stook & Sparks Ltd., Builder’s Merchants. In 1939 he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves as a Pilot, Service Number 134762. He Served with 609 Squadron in 1941, the same year he married Doris Marjorie Tingey. By 1945 they had a baby daughter and were living at 52 Earl Road, Northfleet, and Stanley was flying with 227 Squadron as a Flight Lieutenant.
227 Squadron were part of Bomber Command, flying Lancaster Bombers out of Graveley. On 15th March 1945, Stanley Rouse and his crew went missing on a night raid over Germany. The bomber had been shot down over Illesheim in Bavaria. Stanley died age 28. He is remembered at Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern. Germany.
Stanley Rouse was in the same Form as fellow student Douglas Pascoe, who was also Killed in Action in World War Two.
